Sabi Sabi Selati Camp – South Africa – ☆☆☆☆☆
Date of Travel: May 2009
Selati camp had a great, wide open view of a grass clearing from the main lodge. Although we didn’t see any wildlife in that particular area during our stay, I’m absolutely sure it would be a common occurrence. We just spent most of our waking hours in our room, so we didn’t really give it a chance. The main lodge had a 1950’s safari vibe, which was quite different from our previous safari lodge experiences. The pool area was beautiful as well.
Our room was spotless. Quaint, homey feel with a touch of elegance. I loved the high, thatched and vaulted ceilings. Our outdoor area in the rear of the chalet was beautifully hardscaped with an outdoor shower. We had a tiny bit of a noise issue when relaxing in our room, but when we told the staff about our disturbance, they left a bottle of wine and an apology letter beside the bed for us. Such a great group of people for making it up to us!
The game drives (we went on a total of 3 during our short stay) offered up close sightings of elephants, cape buffalo, giraffe, one skittish hyena, a male cheetah, plenty members of the antelope family and an array of birds, insects and reptilian creatures. Our driver and tracker were very pleasant. Our truck was a little on the full side, so we couldn’t hear half of what the driver was saying during our outings. No big deal though.. it was enjoyable none the less. Next time we hope to be offered hot water bottles during the A.M. drives, maybe just request them from the start so you’re sure to be comfortably toasty.
The breakfasts were lovely, a great variety of buffet options and choice of hot specials were available. Each night we had large family style dinners with all of the guests. It would have been nice to have had at least one private dinner at our chalet. Perhaps if you request this when booking, they will be happy to do so. If your preference is to exhibit your irresistibly captivating personality, you will be more than happy with this flamboyant group dinner scene.
All in all, the staff at Selati were outstanding. This really is an acceptable accommodation and I hope to visit again in the future!
*Again, I apologize for not having photos of our chalet. Most of my future reviews will have detailed images for your viewing pleasure!
